No sound from speakers on my Dell...

Hello. I have a problem with the sound on my computer..that is, there is no sound coming from the set of 'e-machines' desktop spkrs, I have connected to my Dell pc. First, the 'vitals' of my pc: I've got a Dell Optiplex 745, w/Windows XP Prof (sp3) installed. When I go into the Device Mgr, then 'Other Devices', there's 5 things listed under Other Devices, all of which have the yellow ? and ! next to them. The devices are: Audio Device On High Definition Audio Bus, Ethernet Controller, SM Bus Controller, Video Controller and Video Controller (VGA Compatible). All of them say "Drivers for device not installed. (Code 28)". When I try to reinstall the drivers, it says it can't find the necessary hardware.
I also tried running (booting from CD) the Dell Drivers & Utilities (all 3 CD's) for this computer, but no luck so far. One of the tests ran, was for the sound coming from left, right and both channels of spkrs; in which it says it passed. I've only recently powered up my pc..it'd been in storage for 2 yrs, but I do remember having sound with no problem then. Any ideas on what I could try? Thank you!

That, "booting from the Dell Drivers & utilities CD" doesn't sound right to me. A drivers & utilities CD should not be bootable.

You said you tried to reinstall the drivers. From where? If you tried the Device Manager option to find drivers from Microsoft, I would caution against that, because Microsoft doesn't do drivers. However, that 'should' allow you to browse to the Drivers CD for the necessary drivers.

But the eMachines speakers may be a different matter. If these speakers did not come with the Dell machine then you may need specific drivers for them from the eMachine's web site. But then again I have never had to install drivers for speakers, only sound cards.
