Is it possible to upgrade my HP DV9000 with these CPU's?
Hi everybody,
My video card on my DV9000 just gave out a few days ago and decided to upgrade the mobo and the CPU. I came across a few processors that I would like to put in my mobo since all of them were about the same price. The processors are: Intel's T7800, T9500, and x7800 (I'm more interested on the x7800). I would like to know if any of these CPU's would work on my mobo. If any of these CPU's wouldn't work please state why (that's for my personal understanding). If it helps, the part number of my mobo is 461069-001. From what I researched and asked, this mobo supports socket P with FSB rated at 800MHz. It has the 512Mb 8600M GS Nvidia card and supports 4Mb of L2 cache. Thanks in advance!

Screen goes black (off?)
Today, my screen has gone black in the middle of what I'm doing online (once on FaceBook, once while playing installed game). I turn off the monitor for 30 seconds, then on again, and the screen is then fine.
I have a Dell Dimension E520, Windows XP, Media Center Edition 2005, Version 2002, Service Pack3. Cable connection, Linksys Broadband Router. Running Norton Internet Security.
What could be the cause of this?

I Need help on which laptop to purchase
Hello everyone I am very new to this forum and I would like your advice as to which laptop I should buy out of these two (listed below) i want to purchase a very fast laptop so i had my eyes set out on the HP (because of the battery life, weight & slightly cheaper price) but then i realised that this Asus has the new i5 processor, which are faster than the Phenom ii.
so my questions are: which should i choose (I do not play any games and rarely video edit); are the i5's that much faster (would i notice the difference?) and is HP a reliable brand as I have heard some bad things about this company's products)?
Thank's

Starcraft 2 graphic artifacts
Just got SC2 for Christmas, I'm loving the game so far, but I'm worried about the artifacts I'm getting. Sometimes it will be bright streaks of light from the SCVs or it will be "smears" of blood from Zerg. The game has never crashed on me, although I've gotten some pretty interesting temps on both CPU and GPU, up to mid 90's on both. Mostly temps are in upper 80s for CPU and mid 70's for GPU.
This video shows an example of what I am getting.
My specs are as follows:
DV6tSe
Core i5 m450 @ 2.4GHz
Radeon 5650 1Gb
6Gb Ram
Windows 7
160 Gb SSD
Settings are all on medium, which I believed should be completely playable on this machine. Framerate is decent also, no noticeable lag.

HP DV6T:SE replacement LCD
So I have managed to crack the LCD inside my dv6t select edition notebook. If anyone cares, I dropped the laptop inside a bag about a foot off the ground and the screen cracked, so be warned, the laptop's very fragile.
So obviously this would not be covered under the standard warranty (I do not have any extended or accidental coverage). I looked up the price for a replacement LCD from HP, but it was an outrageous $270.
I have been searching around and seeing replacement LCD's from other places for a lot cheaper. The only problem is, I am not exactly sure which ones will work. I managed to find one on ebay for only $71 that seems like it would work, but I'm still not sure, see link below.
( )
My question is has anyone here replaced the LCD in this particular laptop and can anyone direct me to a a replacement LCD I can buy that will work?
Thanks in advance.

Alienware overclocking / underclocking failure
I have recently aquired a m17x r1 with intel q9000 4gb ram gtx 260. Bios a05. My problem is that if I raise the fsb even by one it doesn't post and I have to hard restart the computer three times. I recently updated the bios to a05, but that didn't help. This happens if I raise or lower the fsb. I also tried lowering the memory speed and raising / lowering the fsb. Any help would be appreciated. I'm new to the forum and have found it to be very helpful so far. Thanks in advance.
My g51vx-a1 screen
Hi I just received my g51vx-a1 which has the 1920x1080p screen (model AUO B156HW01 v.5)and will be commenting on the screen only.
This is my criteria for a great quality display:
1) Bright
2) No graininess
3) Good viewing angles
4) Minimal bleed
5) Good color reproduction
6) Uniform illumination
The display on the g51vx-a1 meets most of the criteria but still doesn't satisfy my picky eyes. My hardware ID says it is an AUO, now I hear there is a compatible LG which is better (heard on the dell forums).
The g51 does meet the following criteria:
1) Bright
2) No graininess
5) Good color reproduction (little too blue out of the box though requires adjustment)
6) Uniform illumination
It however lacks in viewing angle, both vertical and horizontally. My biggest complaint however is the light bleed. Looking at the screen straight on, on a dark background there is this annoying greyish hue, what I can only describe as a bell shaped light bleed that extends from the middle of the screen to the bottom. The same kind of bleed you would see on any of those cheap bestbuy pc notebooks. This is disappointing and will be replacing the screen or selling the system when my cashback is available. I will post pictures of the bleed later.
So far the only notebook LCD that was, in my opinion perfect, was the CMO on my old fujitsu lifebook. It had great color, brightness, viewing angles, no light bleed and no graininess. The only problem with that notebook was the gpu was not very good.
I believe the dell xps 1640 uses the same screen and they also use LG screens so I might replace the screen with an LG one if the LG does not suffer from the horrible back light bleeding.
Here are 2 pics of the bleeding:

boot disk for Windows 7
Now that Windows 7 is officially in the market, what is the best and smartest way of creating a recovery and/or boot disk in case the computer crashes? Should the disk be created right after buying a computer with windows 7 installed or can it be created any time?
I have not bought a computer with Windows 7 yet, so does Windows 7 allow the option to create a recovery/boot disk in its software?
Thanks for any help.

XPS M1530 Windows XP Driver Pack (Final) by Udi
I have compiled this over the last week or two - tested and working great. There are many threads on the subject, and lots of jumbled info and driver listings over hundreds of pages. I read them all and did plenty of my own research to compile what I believe is a complete and final pack of drivers. It attempts to provide the best performing and latest drivers (in that order), with no bloatware for the cleanest possible installation. The pack contains detailed installation instructions in a readme file.
Download here (110mb):
(Thanks to DarkSide for the no limits mirror)
If there are any problems, let me know and I'll attempt to fix them and keep the driver pack updated. The only things I haven't tested personally are the HDMI port, and the non-floppy installation method for AHCI SATA, but they should work fine.
Credit has been given where due in the included readme file, a big thanks to everyone in the two long threads that helped make this final pack reality.
If anyone else can mirror the file (with high bandwidth limit or no limit servers) it would be much appreciated. There were over 200 downloads within the first week so I took my personal server's link down. If the mirror doesn't work for any reason, PM me and I'll link you to my personal server.
Enjoy,
Udi

Recommendation for my mother?
She wants a lightweight laptop (due to her condition) and in my opinion, it should have at least 4GB RAM and uses Intel processors (Core i3 is fine).. otherwise it should have web cam and touch pad. Mainly for internet browsing and some MS office suite.
While I would like to recommend her U260 (she likes size of my X200), she doesn't want to pay that much. She wants somewhere between $500-600. Outlet deal is fine. She just wants one before the New Year.
Would there be big sale around that time?
Seems like Edge 14 with Intel (with student discount) + coupon code falls in the range.
Intel Core i3-370M Processor (2.40GHz, 3MB L3, 1066MHz FSB)1
4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)8
UltraNav without fingerprint reader
500 GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm4
for $575 before tax and shipping.
Do I need to make upgrade from Thinkpad bgn wireless to higher WiFi adapters?
While I want to try to get her U260 or T410 around that price, I can't seem to find a deal that falls in that department.
I heard about Visa discount but I'm not too sure how it works. Up to 35% discount right?
I have higher standard for buying my laptops so I can't seem to come to a conclusion.
My father just want her to get anything from Costco but I don't like that idea.. what do you think?
Please help me out!! Thank you!

Problem with my LCD television
I have lines running up and down my Samsung LN46B650TIFXZA. They are not thin lines, but rather an imprinted coloring that runs up and down the length of the television. I tried to upgrade the newest software but to no avail. Is there anything that I can do?
Wait till after CES?
has some good deals on the machine I want second most, the x201. Loaded (but for the SSD option), it can be had for a grand. I'm wondering if at this point it makes sense to hold off till after CES. (My number one option would be the T410s, in case you're interested.
)
M11x Will Totally Lock Up
No cursor movement, no Ctrl + Alt + Delete seems to do it once every 3 days or so not doing anything specific it is totally random mostly when just browsing the web. I have to force it off holding the power button.
I did upgrade my RAM to 8GB when I first got it and never tested the original RAM but could it be flaky RAM causing something like this? I always thought bad RAM would just BSOD not lock up in this manner. I am not overclocking either.

G51 Copper + Heat sink blocks mod
This is message will hopefully grab the attention of forge or soviet sunrise.
I have the assu g51vx-rx05 model. Cut my own whole out with soldering iron and will be grilling it this week. However I've read many of the threads posted and can't seem to find where people are getting these heatsink blocks to attach to copper pipes and was wondering if I could get some links.
As well as thermal pads what conductivity do you suggest? I've seen a sheet of this stuff on digikey with 4.1m/k (I believe thats the measurement) of heat conductivity.
As for the copper shim Idea? I thought of doing it but I don't know where to start. I know a guy on ebay who will custom cut my size. However I'm not sure where to apply the copper shims (EG all of the components? or just northbridge, cpu, and gpu, OR all the components (the vram chips and stuff)).
If you guys have a measurements list of the copper shims that would be great.
I run 100-102 c in furmark with cover off and a huge home fan blowing underneath it. I've replaced the thermal pad under cpu and gpu with AS5(and 2 parts of cpu where thermal pad fell off). I'll also note that some of the thermal pads have random cat hairs on them
.
However furmark is a benchmark. Counter strike and Garrys mod dont go past 70 on some realitively high settings.
Suggestions greatly appreciated before I make my next buy of parts.

asus G73JH Can't do some things
Hello! I've got some problems - the first is that my fancy start utility doesn't work (anything i do in this programm - nothing happens with loadscreen), the second is when i'm trying to change bios in latest RBE only thing that can be changed is clocks, changing voltage doesn't work at all (AMD GPU clock doesn't show any changes in high side (clocks after 700:1000 and voltages at all)) Real temp gt doesn't show differences at all. Maybe there is a way to check videocard's parameters properly, and to make higher voltages in vbios?

Can't use AlienRespawn DVDs to recover M11x R2 to smaller SSD
Hi folks,
I've looked around and can't seem to find anyone with my exact problem. I have an M11x R2 I got in September with a 500GB hard drive in it. I created my AlienRespawn recovery DVDs and tucked them away in case I ever needed to restore. For Christmas, my brother got me a 128GB SSD. I replaced the 500GB drive with the 128GB SSD, hooked up my external DVD writer, and popped the recovery DVDs in.
When I get to the AlienRespawn menu after the recovery UI appears, no matter what options I choose, I receive an error stating that "Your hard drive is not supported for this process" and that I need to use a drive that's at least ~451GB in size. I thought you could recover on to a drive of any size? The recovery DVDs are all I have as far as system backups go.
Thanks for the help in advance!

Random restarts... PLEASE HELP, I'M GOING INSANE.
I upgraded from a single core to a dual core processor, and suddenly my computer started to restart randomly. I figured it must have been the new processor, so I picked up another dual core. The same thing is still happening. I have since tested other hard drives, reset the BIOS, replaced my graphics card, checked the internal temperatures, checked my RAM, reapplied thermal paste to the processor, tried running the computer open in a cold room... Nothing helps. I have no clue what to do.
Specs:
Sys: Windows XP Pro SP3
Mobo: KN1 SLI Lite
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ (Manchester 2.2 Ghz)
RAM: 3 GB
Vid: NVidia GeForce 9500 GT 512 MB
HD: Western Digital 200 GB
350 W PSU
Is it possible that after I got the dual core, my PSU wasn't enough to power the computer anymore? Idk, any help you guys can give would be great.

T410 startup and shutdown issues
I'm having a couple of problems with my laptop and was wondering if anyone here has had any experience of similar issues.
1. After switching the laptop on it hangs on a blank screen for 45 seconds before showing the Thinkpad splash screen and booting up the OS. (which works as normal)
2. Shutting down the laptop doesn't work. The laptop will hang on a blank screen but still be powered on. To turn it off I have to hold the power button in.
tyia for any input

A Toughbook with a little
Sound problem (front - in)
(oops sorry, the title went wrong)
Hello everybody,
My toughbook is a beautiful girl, she went through many, many adventures with me, and always came out clean (well left a little piece of plastic on the road, but still, some transparent tape, et voil). Man, that's a beautiful piece of hardware.
But for a couple month now, the sound is getting worse and worse. That wouldn't be a problem if there was a jack in the back - but there's none, just the one in the front. Problem is that it seems broken to me now, as any speaker/headphone connected to it will invariably produce a lot of jammed and weird noise. I can still cheat with the headphones, adding some weight on the jack itself to make a better connexion, but that's really not top notch. I fear my sound connexion hardware just can't take it anymore, and may need tweaking or fixing.
Because I am not really good at dealing with notebooks, I'd like to hear your opinions about my options. Being in China right now (but I didn't buy it there), I don't feel safe giving the bird to anyone either, and I wondered if you had any proposal (like a bigger/safer/support plug for instance where I'd could put the headphone jack?) that may actually turn it back to normal without having to ask a random person to open it for me.
What would you do if you were me?
Thanks in advance

Dumb question about my Qosmio
How do you create a backup copy of a DVD/CD with this machine using the default software? I know it is easy with software like Nero, but there seems to be no "Disc Copy" function that I can find in the Toshiba software.

Samsung UN46B7000 has intermittent audio loss
I have a Samsung LED tv connected to my PC with and HDMI to HDMI cord connecting into a DVI to HDMI adapter at the back of my computer. I have it connected this way because the TV (unlike all other HDTVs I tested this computer on) does not receive a signal from the HDMI output of my computer.
My computer uses Windows 7 64-bit Pro, I have a ATI Radeon 5870 graphics card.
When performing some functions like watching a Blu-Ray movie, the audio and video both function properly. The problem is that during some other programs I experience intermittent audio dropping through this connection. The audio output does seem to properly output when connected to other devices, indicating the problem is not with my computer system.
There is a firmware update that states it fixes 'intermittent audio drop from some HDMI connections' however, my television does not use this update when properly extracted onto a USB drive, and I think the firmware with my computer is actually more recent than the update on the site.
I have phoned Samsung, however the level I tech support was not as knowledgeable as I had hoped, and were quite dismissive of the research and time I have been spending to fix a problem with a brand new $2000 television. I was then specifically instructed that a PC must be connected to the PC audio in (3.5mm jack). This is clearly not true as the Blu-Ray functions, and this would mean a drastic loss of sound quality. (not to mention the manual specifically states that computers can be connected through a HDMI to HDMI connection with sound, in the manual). The tech would not listen to my reasoning on this and just kept repeating that I need to connect with 3.5mm to have sound, and that if I update the firmware I will void my warranty. (the level II tech had already told me to try updating firmware, but didn't make a record of this and now the level I tech I phoned because it wouldn't update has specifically made a note saying I am NOT to update firmware or my warranty is voided...). There is a _1016 at the end of my firmware file on the TV and the only update on the downloads page is _1013 (I assume mine is newer anyhow)
Please let me know of a solution for my problem, I have been working for days on getting the TV to function properly and at my wits end... it may soon be returned.
Anyone who knows about this would be GREATLY appreciated.

Creating Mirrored Raid on Startup Drive
I have a Mac Pro that I want to create a mirrored RAID set in.
I have a 1TB Hard Drive that is the main system drive.
I just added a 2nd 1TB Hard Drive that I wanted to use along with this first hard drive to create a mirrored RAID set.
I used the following document to help with the process:
I have opened up Disk Utility and think I may know how to do this but a few things concern me.
First, it states that it will erase the contents of the drives it's using to mirror. I had the idea it would simply duplicate the data onto the other drive. Is it true that it will delete the data on the current drive?
Also, it states that you can't create a RAID with the startup disk. Is that true? I currently have a RAID in this system using the disks in bays 3 and 4. I purchased two 1TB disks and created a SERVER DRIVE raid and this drive is shared with all computers on the network as a data drive. I had no issues setting it up but of course both drives were empty when I created this RAID and also these are not the system/startup drives.
Is there a way I can create a RAID with the main Macintosh HD system/startup disk and also do it without erasing the data from the main drive?
Thank you for your help.

Should I bother looking into repasting?
Well, my temps on Idle is usually 50-52, with browsing and doing a bunch of other stuff is usually 54-57 and gaming varies from 58-70, depending on the title of course but it usually hovers around the low 60's and high 60's for the really intensive gaming sessions. Should I look into repasting? It's been about 2 months since I bought the G73, I do remember my temps being lower back then, even being in the low 40's on idle but overall not much.
New Hulu VIRUS Via Windows 7?
Have never had a virus on Windows 7 (64 bit) until watching Charlie Brown's Christmas via Hulu. TONIGHT! 12-24-2010
Not sure if this is the source, "but" surely today is the date. 12-24-2010.
What's going on????, And how do we fix it?
On another computer writing this. The laptop effected is unusable. I've disconnected it to try and figure it out.
Microsoft SUCKS Really BIG TIME... this Time.
Not helpful words I know. But how I feel right about now.

Toshiba Satellite A70 Laptop
I was looking for a laptop and I acually went into a thift store andl the guy was selling the Toshibe Satellite A70 Laptop.
We made a trade. I gave him my dell notebook, the little one, the dell DVD player that attaches to it, and my old desktop that was not working, a flatscreen monitor, and 80 dollars.
Did I do well, I am not very up on computers, i just needed on for Netflix, emails, online bussiness. But when I looked up the computer on line I see it has so many things that I know nothing about.
I read Amrit, from New Zealand, report and boy I was kind of blown away cause he stated a lot of things about the computer, my problem is I don't know very much about how to do things on the computer. So I tried to get a manual, but of course on line there is always a catch, to purchase some thing.
If any one can help me out I would really appreciate it. Also it says DVD player on the side, but it won't play a DVD only CDs, Is there something I am supposed to do to activate the DVD player or do I have to get it fixed?
Don't know what treasue I have, but I know I have one. New to this form, look forward to blogging with members.

Can Auto Motion Plus be turned off for streaming video?
We love our Samsung LN46C650 flat screen but very much disliked the default Auto Motion Plus feature as it makes motion pictures look like a soap opera video recording. After some digging, I figured it was the Auto Motion Plus. I disabled it and the picture turned back to normal - beautiful. But for some reason, streaming videos have Auto Motion Plus as default and turning off the Auto Motion Plus does not turn it off for streaming. All of my Netflicks movies look like soap opera video recordings.
Does someone know how to turn off Auto Motion Plus for streaming videos as well? I am considering buying another Samsung but will not buy one unless I can turn off this feature for streaming video.

Samsung LA40C650
1. Is there a way (special combination) i could get the number of hours that the set has played during the installation of my TV ? Require it for the particular model LA40C650.
2. Can this be reset by the dealer in case he plans to pack the showcased piece into a wrap?
3. In newly unpacked TV is there a default number of hours that would be displayed through pressing secret keys.
I am yet to purchase a new TV and my friend was lucky enough to notice that the serial number he had seen in the showcased TV was the same as that he had received from the shop. I want to avoid such sort when i am purchasing my TV.

Samsung PN50A550 - White Horizontal Line
For the last six months I've been experiencing an intermittent 2 inch white (sometimes static sometimes not) horizontal stripe across the center of the TV. It usually lasts anywhere for 15 seconds to 2 minutes and then disappears but will reappear at whim. The line occurs on all inputs.
I've had it looked at by a repair person and they haven't seen the line with as much frequency as I experience it nor do they seem to be able to figure out how to fix it. I'm reluctant to take the TV to another person until I can figure out exactly what the issue is first.
Thanks for any insight.
Specs: 2 years old Samsung PN50A550 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV. The warranty is past.

G73jh Red Vertical lines on lcd(none on external) -what if it repeats?
Hey,
While I was typing, suddenly red vertical lines appeared on the whole screen. The lines were sensible to movement of the screen and typing. I dont observe any lines when I connect it to an external display. I am using vbios v93, 10.12 drivers and bios 211, its definitely not a gsod, the temperatures were normal also.
I've repasted like 1-1.5 months ago, so I disassembled the notebook and replugged the cable. It's been 5 mins and it seems fine just for now.
What shall I do if it repeats? I don't know how the Asus Service in Turkey will respond as I've disassembled it (cpu is untouched but they may say that its out of warranty). Will just buying a new lcd do it?
Any responses or other suggestions will be appreciated, thanks.

New to OC'ing
Hey.
I read somewhere on this forum that it was possible to "safely" OC the 5850 to work the same as a 5870.
This sounds very interesting, and I would love to do it, but I know nothing at all about OC'ing, and would like to hear if any of you could make a step-by-step guide on how to do it?
I saw that there were other threads for OC'ing this GPU, but I dont really understand much of what you are saying, so I would really love it if one of you would make a guide for me (and other newbs
)
I would also like to know if I can reset the settings if anything goes wrong, so that dell wont notice when I call for a repair

Thinkpad Edge screen issue
I recently got a Thinkpad Edge and I can actually see the individual pixels on the screen. Its most apparent on white backgrounds. It looks like tiny empty boxes with a dark outline. Has anyone else noticed this? Is this just a common issue with low resolution screens now a days?
Macbook Pro 15" i5 2010 Heating and Gaming?
Hey
Sorry if there is a clear answer to this but I've heard very mixed things about the Macbook Pro 15. I'm looking into purchasing this laptop within the next month and I have a few concerns:
I want to be able to run WoW, SC2, and CS 1.6 on this laptop. I know for certain that WoW and SC2 will run because Blizz is that cool, but CS 1.6 has no native Mac version. Is there some sort of elegant solution that will allow me to run CS 1.6 on OS X? When I say run, I mean 100fps, no input lag, OpenGL.
My second concern is heating. I've heard different things from "warm" under load to scalding hot. What kind of heat will I be feeling on the palmrest if I had the Macbook Pro 15 on a hard, flat, wooden surface running WoW native resolution with all settings low and CS 1.6 Native Resolution? Both at the highest fps they can run at?
Thanks for taking the time to read my post and looking forward to feedback.

Dell XPS M1330 - nVidia GeForce 8400M GS - Copper Mod
- Various Links.
Updates:
July 8, 2009: Celebrating 1st Anniversary of Dell XPS M1330 - nVidia GeForce 8400M GS - Copper Mod. My notebook is running great without any spares, service or repair!
December 21, 2009: My Dell XPS M1330 notebook's LED backlight switches off and replacement screen or cable does not correct the problem although external monitor (via VGA or HDMI port) displays video flawlessly. Dell's technician suspects heat from the wireless card breaking up the circuit and suggests replacing the motherboard for correcting the problem. With this my first Copper Mod has lasted me for 531 days (1 year, 5 months, 1 week and 6 days).
December 28, 2009: The motherboard was replaced by Dell's technician today and I have redone the Copper Mod.

Dead pixel gamble
Recently I got Samsung UN46C6400 LED TV. There are two dead pixels - one close to the middle, another more in the upper half of the screen. Samsung customer service feels sorry for me but won't do anything about it because two dead pixels are within the "tolerance". I asked how many they need to make it "intolerable", but wasn't given an answer.
I feel like I got involved in some weired gamble. Thousands of people purchased the same TV for the same price. And yet most will enjoy dead pixel free screens while for some of us black dots will every day remind that we lost the Samsung lottery.
Yes, I've heard the story about how dead pixel free guarantee would drive cost too high. But wouldn't it be more fair if manufacturers were required to count dead pixels and indicate the number on the box and let consumer decide how much she's willing to pay?

50IJ WEIRD keyboard problem
This started a couple days ago seemingly out of nowhere.
The "a" and minus keys don't work. The other day, minuses kept appearing in random places in words, then that stopped and "a"s started popping up after certain characters: d, f, j, k, l, and ;. Minuses pop up if I hit the "fn" key without hitting anything else. They will go on continuously until I hit another key.
Nothing changed in safe mode or when I reinstalled the keyboard driver. But I restored the system to before the problem and the "a" stopped popping up after f and j. also, if I hold down the menu key, I can type all the letters normally, but the minus things aren't fixed and I get additional problems: The semicolon button doesn't work, and although both shift buttons and the forward slash all work, I can only make a question mark using the left shift button.
What is this?

Merging external to OS(C:) drive
Hi,
I recently bought an external hard drive to back up files from my laptop, since I had only 250MB left of the 58.5GB on my OS(C:) drive, which I was able to do. I use image editing soft ware which takes up a lot of driver space as does my Itunes library I think, so I was wondering if it would be possible to combine my laptops hard drive with the external hard drive to act as an extension to it so they could run together. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

drive won't mount
I have a G3 Pismo laptop with a 30GB drive. The drive has an OSX partition and a classic partition. However, it recently quit booting form the OSX partition and will not mount this.
Disc Utility run from DVD will not repair it. I have used Tech Tool on it three times. After the last "repair" Tech Tool said the volume passed, but it still doesn't mount.
I tried using it in Target Disc mode with my G4. Still, only the OS 9 volume mounts. Toast will not create a disc image, so I guess I'm screwed.
My only options at this point are older classic utilities. Is there any chance that Disc Warrior for OS 9 will get this volume to mount so I can copy things, format, and reinstall?

Sorry guy's, but when it come's to computers, I'm retarded. I only have the one USB port on the back of my CF-28 MkI. I've seen those 4 port USB hubs and was wondering if I can use that. I wanted to use a USB mouse and my flash drive at the same time, can I?
Laptop Coolers/Cooling Pads
Hi,
currently I am looking for a cooling pad for my laptop, since I use it a lot for gaming, so the gpu gets so hot that you could fry an egg on it.
Does anyone of you have experiences with those for a 17" laptop?
I use the laptop alot while having it on my lap, so I am also wondering if the fans would be working properly if put it on my lap with the pc on top and about the gel cooling pats I was wondering if they last long enough (more than just 2-3h) or if the gel slowly would move to the lower side of the pad so it wouldn't cool properly anymore.
Just today I saw a mini cooling device called Evercool Fairy Compact Pocket Size Laptop Cooler and I am wondering if that can do the job at all.
I am really looking forward to your replies.
Thanks in advance.

Router question (about speed)
I know with wireless , n being the best , g, b . etc
But my question is - Are some routers faster when dealing the actual wired ports?
Ive been noticing that my router has been acting up, Ive been having to refresh pages once or twice to get them to fully load. I have a Netgear mr814 11mbs b . ( the computers in question are actually plugged in. (wired)
Would buying something like this .... increase my wired speed? Cuz right now it seems i get alot of "drops". Or like 20 second spans where my internet gets screwy.
thanks!

Handhelds/PDA
I can't find a driver for my m500 Palm or my visor so that they will work with vista home premium. Any help appreciated.
I accidentally deleted my recording device on my laptop.
The computer is a HP G60-230US. The current software is a Windows Vista. I was trying to disable my microphone, and happened to delete my microphone. Now when I'm making online calls, the others cannot hear me. Is there a software to download to fix this issue? I do not currently have the restore cd. This was just done about 1 day ago.

I notice there are different speed rating listed on cpu-z is there anyway to activate those. Sofar i think the bios is pretty locked up so i cant do much there.

MSI FAQs
1. Who is MSI?
Micro-Star International (MSI) is a Taiwanese computer and components manufacturer. MSI specializes in the design and manufacture of motherboards, graphics cards, barebone PCs, notebook computers, networking products, servers, multimedia, consumer electronics, and storage devices. It manufactures both ATI and nVidia chipset graphics cards. Some custom personal computer manufacturers such as Alienware and Falcon Northwest have been known to sell PCs equipped with MSI branded motherboards. MSI has been known to produce motherboards which are suitable for overclocking which is popular among hardcore PC gamers. MSI products are sold as retail, OEM parts, or to other corporations. (Wikipedia).
2. What is a whitebook?
A whitebook is a highly configurable notebook that is often sold with
just the chassis and vital components such as the motherboard, screen,
battery, etc. What's missing is the software, CPU, RAM, Hard Drive,
Bluetooth, and occasionally optical drives. Often, MSI resellers
give consumers the option of having them install these components for them,
or allowing the consumer to purchase it as a barebone should he/she decide
to install these component themselves. As such, whitebooks can often end up costing
much less than their name brand counterparts. In addition, most American consumers
are able to avoid hefty sales tax, provided that they purchase a whitebook from a reseller
residing in a different state.
In addition to whitebooks, MSI sometimes sell their notebooks directly to the public in pre-configured models. Averatec is also known to use a few MSI models for their thin and light/ ultra portable models.
3. Where to find MSI?
Due to the number of resellers, as well as the varying designations given to
rebranded MSI whitebooks, it will be difficult to list them all. However
the list below represents some of the more well known MSI vendors.

As of 5 October 2008, this thread is also the owners' lounge for ASUS M51Ta. Enjoy! E.B.E.
Long time reader, first time poster..
I have been researching laptops for a while and I am in the market for a 15 inch with moderately nice features. I have several candidates in mind, but all that is beside the point.
I recently noticed a new posting on newegg for a puma based Asus called the M51ta. It has comparable features to the new intel based M50 and its a few hundred dollars cheaper. The only problem is there is no information on it what so ever. The only info is in the newegg listing and it isn't very specific.

Loose Power Connection
I've read dozens of solutions to this problem which all blame the internal power jack as the problem, but when I take the power cord from my docking station and plug it directly into the notebook, I have a good connection, and the power cord I was using directly in the notebook doesn't make a good connection with the docking station. Hence, it appears that plug on the power cord is worn down. Any solutions for this problem? It's an HP Pavillion dv6700 if it makes a difference. Thanks.
Why my girlfriend and technology don't mix well
Yesterday I got a hysterical call from my girlfriend. She had been cooking our dinner from an online recipe and had decided to place the laptop on top of the oven to see it better
.
She turned on the hob to boil some water in a pan on the other side of the other side of the oven .................................................................... 5 minutes later she smells something funny and as she comes back into the kitchen she sees flames spurting out from under the laptop
.................................................................... She'd accidently turned on the hob which had the laptop sitting on it and was just beginning to create boiled laptop for dinner!!!
I've uploaded a picture of the fire damage to the laptop
However, amazingly the laptop still works which I think says something about the hardiness of Dells.
I'm now trying to cover up as much of the damage as possible. Luckily a large amount of the damage was to the battery which can easily be replaced. However, I'm struggling to find something to cover the parts of the central casing which were melted away. They are definitely not replaceable and I'm not even sure which bits are exposed (I'm no good with hardware)
I was thinking about trying to buy a thin sheet of metal and just screwing it in to cover the exposed parts. However, I have no idea what sort of place would sell something like that or whether it would even work.
If anyone has any ideas about ways I could cover the laptop or where I could buy a thin sheet of metal (I'm in the UK), I'd really appreciate it.
UPDATE: Surprisingly as of 23rd October 2010 the laptop is still going strong. In the end I didn't manage to find the time to replace the chasis or harddrive etc. so it is still exactly in the same condition as the picture. I replaced the battery but it didn't last very long (not sure whether that was ebay or the laptop) and now use it without a battery
It still works perfectly although I back it up regularly. Dells really are amazingly hardy machines.
In the end I decided not to replace my girlfriend but I did buy a fire-extinguisher for the kitchen!

Google chrome, cursor/insertion pointer not moving when I press home/end key
Just done a new install of windows 7, this was working fine under xp and I believe its the same chrome version.
When I type something and press the home or end key, the blinking cursor/pointer thing doesn't move, instead when pressing the home key nothing happens, and when pressing the end key I end up scrolling down the page.
This only appears to happen in chrome, I've looked through the settings but couldn't see anything.
Anyone have any ideas?

ATI LCD color adjustment tips...
Hi all,
For a "multimedia" laptop, the LW70's (and probably LG laptops) LCD color balance is absolutley shocking.
Compare it next to a good PC LCD monitor and youll see what i mean.
To fix this, i used the ATI color control panel to change the red/green/blue brightness, contrast and gamma levels.
These are the settings i now use (gamma, brightness, contrast in that order):
Red: 1.00, 0, 100
Green: 1.10, 0, 80
Blue: 1.00, 5, 36
Blue is the real problem with these LCDs... its far too bright and is not linear.
With these settings windows will look like it has a shade of red compared to defualt levels, but compare it with a good LCD and youll see its much better.
Doing this also fixed the eye-strain problems i was having.
Let me know what you guys think!

How to disassemble Toshiba Laptops.
Hey guys, I just plan to start a new website. This site will provide instructions how to disassemble Toshiba laptops. I already created guides for Toshiba Satellite 1415, Toshiba Satellite M35X, and Toshiba Satellite A60/A65. I'm not sure if somebody needs this kind of guides. What do you think?

dv6t SE graphics quirks
I've had my dv6t for a few months now and as I've been using it, I've encountered quite a few situations that give problems and/or cause me to have to shut down in order to make the computer work again. I use the switchable graphics (which is really nice) however, sometimes when I wake the laptop from sleep (after just unplugging it), the graphics will not switch automatically and cannot be switched until the computer is restarted. Other times after sleep, the entire computer freezes and must be manually powered off and rebooted to even function. Has anyone else had these or similar quirks with the switchable graphics? For me, I like the idea, but it's very unreliable.

Where can I get the webcam driver for the Dell STudio 1555 and WIndows 7 32bit?
It's not listed on 's website (which is a b*tch to navigate). I got my laptop used so i don't have the CD with me, and i think it was loaded with WIndows XP originally too.
Webcam and other peripherials not working after PC restore
I had my Toshiba satellite upgraded to Win7 Ult from Vista (both 32bit).
My friend had to completely wipe my hard drive due to viruses etc. which was stopping him from upgrading easily.
So therefore when I received my laptop back he told me that it was just as if I had a brand new computer. I trust my friend and dont think he has done anything wrong.
Now for some reason, my drivers for webcam, SD card reader, Audio mixer etc do not work. He told me that I need to reinstall the drivers for each through either Toshiba &/or Microsoft.
I have tried both sites but neither contain specific drivers for my model laptop
I have opened up device manager and checked each components properties.
Then clicked on the driver tab -> update driver -> 'search auto...'
All of them say "Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date."
My webcam (Chicony 2.0) works to an extent, but is missing the 'Camera assist software' which allows the user to fine tune the camera.
If anyone can help me with my situation, would be much appreciated. Im not a genius with computers, but I can find my way around so laymans terms would be awesome.
Cheers

Adding Aftermarket Internal GPS to the CF-29
So folks, there is a new cf-29 faq created from super mnementh.
on my cf-29mk5 wasnt a internal gps, but i need it.
i bought an 54 channel gpsmouse with usb, i did not know at this time, that there are enough serial ports inside the toughbook ( i.e. near the keyboard-connector).
I read many pages in this forum, but found no hint to integrat an gps-mouse in the computer.
i opened the machine and there are some open connectors.
In the site modly.org i found the schematic from the greatfull ohlip of connector cn18.
I used the usb- and power-pins with an flatcable from an defective tft-display, for my luck an 40pin.
Left from the handle is, if u dismantel this an hole. I dont know for what, but i used the hole, to put a mini switch with a cable soldered on it, to switch on and off the gps-mouse (50mA) over the USB-Power.
In the closed-cover from the hole i cut an window for the switch.
The innerside of the hole was filled with hot-glue from the pistol, so no water can float the laptop trough this hole.
The flatcable is cuted beside the pins i need, the soldering is easy now. Its fixed with big balls of glue and a tape around.
Gps-Mouse found her home in the little plastic-thing without her plastic-clothes, where in original the Gps is located. It was a little cutt-modification on the plastic till the GPS slips in. Be carefull not to destroy the gumlipps!
There only on problem. Half of the antenna is now behind the magnesium so it detect only 2 instead 8 satelites outer there.
Any reasons?

Is my Extensa 5620-6830 a done deal?
Can anyone help??? I have an Extensa 5620-6830 with some big issues. First off, on bootup the HDD is requiring a password from me which I do not know. After attempting 3 guesses, a dark screen shows up along with some information which says:
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Broadcom PXE ROM
Operating system not found
Don't know if it really matters, but I'm still able to acess BIOS setup by hitting F2 on startup.
