Need Help with Network Connection; Ethernet to Wireless

I'm running windows xp 32 bit on a macbook pro with bootcamp. The other night I needed to connect to ethernet as there was no wireless available where I was. When I plugged the cable in, and I know for a fact it was working, I couldnt get internet. Ethernet was enabled and it even said I was connected, I even recieved a few packets. I spent hours online looking up how to fix the problem and finally figured it out on my own. I literally only had to uncheck a box in a connection tab under wireless and check that same box under ethernet. It worked, but now I'm back at my home with no ethernet and only wireless. The problem is I've forgotten how I found that window where I switched the setting. If anyone could give a list of suggestions as to where I might find such a window it would be immensely appreciated. It was almost like the Network Connections window had been condensed into a list of tabs, from what I remember, with a wireless tab and an ethernet tab and possibly a 1394 connection tab.

If someone could just reply with a list of all possible windows you can access having to do with network connections/networks, that might do it.

The funny thing is, from what I read online it appeared many people had the same problem I did, not being able to access either ethernet or wireless on windows using bootcamp, but no one had the solution. So having found it I was eager to post it later to help everyone out.

So please, please just jog your memory/knowledge of windows xp for all possible windows/control panels having to do with networking and I would be greatly obliged.

Thanks,

Dlink Dir 655 - Connectivity issues (surprise surprise)

Hi everyone,

Was wondering if anyone could offer some advice.

I have been using the about router for the last 2.5 ish years with almost no issues. Recently however I can hardly connect to it, there are times, like now where I have no issues. Most of the time it's just a nightmare.

My wife and I are running 2 laptops, a PS3 and our phones through the router. We moved house, from a condo, last year and have nothing but issues since. I bought a repeater last year to boost the signal, that doesn't seem to be the issue though as the signal strength rarely goes below 100% and the signal quality is always 'excellent'.

When I bought the router I was using it in G/N mode, my sadly RIP 3 year old Lenovo T61P was N capable, her T60 wasn't. Now we just run it in G (or G/N mode) as G is the maximum speed for her laptop (and my work one I am typing on right now).

Of the local visible networks we have a next door neighbor on G channel 11 and another on G channel 7, that's it in terms of visible networks. We are on G channel 3.

The transmit rate on our router goes from 54mbps to 1mbps to 32mbps to 1mbps to 54mbps within 5-10 secs. Most of the time it's stuck at 1mbps. I have set the transmit rate at 54mbps but it doesn't stop it fluctuating. When I can connect to the router after a period of inactivity I will log into it and reboot it and sometimes it'll be fine. Sometime I have to resest the whole thing and upload the config file to the router to reset it. When I have reset it and the security is off there is no issues connecting.... Great.

I have tried turning Channel Auto off, selecting channels, changing from G to G/N to just B or G/B mixed. Nothing seems to help.

It isn't a problem with just one laptop either, when the laptops cannot connect I can't connect with the PS3's or phones...

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated!

Hi,

Try this:

Wireless:

Mode: G only

Channel: 1, 6 or 11 try which one works best.

Rate: Auto

Width: 20Mhz

Mode: WPA Only

Cihper: TKIP

Advanced Wireless:

WLAN Partition: Check

WMM Enable: Check

Short GI: Uncheck

Extra Wireless Protection: Check

Wish:

Enable WISH: Uncheck

QoS Engine:

Enable Traffic Shaping: Uncheck

Enable QoS Engine: Uncheck

Reply 2 : Dlink Dir 655 - Connectivity issues (surprise surprise)

Thanks! I'll give that a try. The only thing I couldn't do was the bandwidth, it's not an option on G only. On the orig config 'Short GI' was checked and 'WLAN Partition' was unchecked.

If this fixes it you have cyber friend for life!!

Thanks again.

Hopefully all goes well let us know your results, I could use a good cyber buddy.

Video glitch display port to hdmi

When I watch video on my m15x through my display port to hdmi cable, I get a horizontal glitchy looking line during anything with a lot of motion. Drives me crazy when I'm watching netflix.

Tv is a 42"vizio.

I have a gt 240m card, and my driver is 258.96

Any ideas?

Reply 1 : Video glitch display port to hdmi

Sounds like a v-sync issue. Not sure how you'd resolve it though.

Reply 2 : Video glitch display port to hdmi

Do you have Aero enabled? (Assuming you are using Windows Vista or newer)

If not, try enable it. If you are using two monitors, try disable one monitor, or try disable Aero (if it is enabled).

Reply 3 : Video glitch display port to hdmi

yes, aero is enabled. i've tried it mirroring the display, and only using the TV as the single display.

Stange thing is, it only happens on certain tv's.

happens on my 42" vizio, but not on my gf's 37" vizio.

Reply 4 : Video glitch display port to hdmi

What refresh rate have you set it to?

Reply 5 : Video glitch display port to hdmi

I just recently got this problem when i updated to the latest drivers for my 5850m.

I have an HDMI cable from the M15x to my receiver, and from the receiver i have a HDMI cable to my plasma.

I get this exact same problem only when im running Extended display.

Never had this problem before.

Reply 6 : Video glitch display port to hdmi

Do you have your 5850 overclocked at all?

Reply 7 : Video glitch display port to hdmi

Yes i have it overclocked via AMD overdrive. But i somehow cannot seem to replicate this problem now.. But in case i get this glitch again ill try to set GPU to stock clocks to see if that fixes it.

Thanks

Reply 8 : Video glitch display port to hdmi

Any time I have my video card overclocked (even when I'm using overdrive and no matter what clocks) my external display will flash and do weird things upon button clicks or scrolling.

ViciousXUSMC's Portal 2 Review

I have beat Portal 2 both single player & co-op.

This game has incredibly large hype and one of the largest release events I have ever seen, so its going to raise the question of many "Is the game good, is it worth buying?"

I want to just do a short review direct from my thoughts to the forum. A small review of the game to let you know how I feel about the game to help answer those questions.

First a brief history. Portal was a small experimental game based on another game called Narbacular Drop, I do believe the actual team that made that game helped with Portal's creation. But Portal was not the first game with the concept.

As a small "pack in game" with Valves Orange Box it was a huge success, and due to the games popularity a sequel was bound to happen. This time around the game is a stand alone project, getting all of the time, funds and effort a stand alone game gets instead of just being a small project like the first game was.

So how does this translate into quality of the game?

Firstly Portal 2 is using the Source engine, this is actually a good thing as the graphics look good but its easy to run so people without high end hardware can enjoy the game properly. So graphics quality is good and thats really all I will say about graphics. Its the gameplay that really determines if the game is good or not.

The first and largest difference between Portal 1 and 2 is probably the amount of time spent on voice acting and story development. There is a large amount of spoken dialog in the game and all of it was very well done. Some of the best I have heard in a game.

The story is actually quite good throughout the game, its not seat gripping but it was entertaining and quite fitting for the game and directly fits as a sequel to Portal 1.

You have the return of the crazy corrupted Glados, and a new character Wheatley who is quite frankly funny as hell. There is even yet another main character that I wont spoil for you, all 3 of these characters are excellently voiced and have there very own very distinct personalities.

Having two opposite personalities go head to head gives the game an interesting dynamic. I found the humor of Wheatley to be a major part of the game and one of the bigger drawings to why I would like the game. I unfortunately however found the game to open on a high note with tons of humor and great dialog and pretty quickly as you get to the mid game, that humor is all but gone and the dialog direction has changed.

I wish they would have found a way to use Wheatleys character in context longer and kept the humor notes high throughout the game.

The challenge of Portal 2 was something else I was looking forward too. From all of the teaser videos we had seen, we saw many new environmental objects and puzzle elements that gave off the impression that Portal 2 was going to be harder than ever to figure out. As a puzzle game the "figuring it out" part is what the game is all about. It needs to be challenging, the more challenging the puzzle the greater the feeling of reward when you figure it out.

I have to report sadly that I feel Portal 2 was actually easier than Portal 1 in a lot of ways despite all these new features and elements introduced in the game. It just feels a lot more linear and forced like CoD style games where you may have this huge environment to explore but 90% of it is inaccessible and filled with "invisible walls". Portal 1 was much more "sandbox" if you saw a place there was a way to get to it, if you were supposed to go there or not who knows.

Portal 2 will use differences in texture on the wall to hint where a portal needs to go to progress through the stage, and pretty much any surface/wall/place that you are not supposed to go is a type of wall that a portal can not be placed on. This eliminates much of the puzzle solving element to the game and really lays it out for you in a way that you just have to figure out the order of things to solve a puzzle and not the puzzle itself.

Some say it was dumbed down for consoles because it was released for PS3 and PC, this may very well be true. I noticed other small things that make a difference like how portal behavior works, it seems like more stuff is done for you now rather than relying completely on your portal placement and ability to properly enter the portals.

So gameplay wise the game is very good, but not very great. It has more potential than what is really being used.

My biggest floating thought about the game right now: I hope that user created maps make it to the scene to expand the replay value of the game and difficulty.

But that takes us back to the cross platform play again. I am afraid that having this on PS3 may effect PC users. I have already seen "warnings" stating things like a skin purchased for the PC version of the game will not be visible to PS3 players. If Portal 2 is not able to share a simple skin file with PS3 than how are we going to add entire new levels? Will Valve be willing to let PC users have access to content that the PS3 players will not? What will happen if its a map they can not play and your in co-op mode? I think this is going to damn the game in the long run.

If they have locked down the PC version for the sake of sharing with consoles they pretty much already placed the dead end sign on this games life span ahead of time instead of letting it run on for as long as possible.

I can tell you Portal 1 lasted much longer because of the player created content available. I have even re-installed it a few times just to play some new map packs. As a puzzle solving game once you have all the puzzles figured out there is not much left to do unless you can get new puzzles pretty simple really.

They maybe wanted extra sales to the game by adding PS3 to the platform list, but I think that having more people done with the game because there is nothing left to do is worse than letting it be PC only where the game could live on as a legend for quite some time.

Talking about replay value, let us now talk about co-op mode. This is another of the large differences in the new game. Now you and a friend can go online and solve a whole new set of stages designed just for co-op play. This is good fun, the game has built in text chat & voice chat. (Note to all readers, the game defaults with your microphone open, put it on push to talk as to not disturb other players unless your using a headset!)

Having co-op adds more gameplay hours, but does it add more replay value? I say yes it does but not greatly. The first time you do co-op is still going to be the only "real" time you get the play it by facing the puzzles and challenges for the first time. After you figure them out doing it again with a new friend is more like just going through the paces. You will only be able to do this so many times before you feel its just pointless to do it again.

This leads to the next part of the discussion... "The curse of the hats" everybody knows what has happened to Team Fortress 2, the mad craze over items and hats. Well the virus has spread and Portal 2 co-op has a full blown item store to buy skins, hats, and accessories for your bot.

I simply cant understand this as a player, TF2 is a competitive FPS game. There is not "do it once and never again" aspect like Portal. So if you have an item to wear you have a reason to wear it and a reason to keep playing the game. I really cant see anybody playing Portal 2 co-op so often and so many times to make purchasing a skin worth it. Sadly the items are so small and minor that you can hardly see them anyways. Also keep in mind you wont see your own skins/items only your partner. Just one person... in a game like TF2 you are showing it to many people at once.

Last I checked all the unlocks to TF2 are found and not purchased anyways with the exception of those you get for buying other games not related to TF2 that gives a TF2 hat.

I think it would have been a much much better idea to have these in the game as unlockable items via achievements, this would promote playing the game more and add some replay value. Something any game desperately needs to try and capitalize on. If you want all the current items you have to spend $35 for the complete pack when the game itself can be purchased for $35.00.... Yeah you probably know where I am going with this.

So co-op is great, but just like single player it may be lacking replay value and desperately needs a way to get new stages added to keep the game alive over a longer period of time. I am sure they will release new stages at some point but I can only hope its free and not some DLC we have to pay for.

In summary, Portal 2 is great and a worthy sequel to the first. I do recommend you play Portal 1 first and beat it before playing Portal 2 as to know the games story and to get full enjoyment out of the title. Playtime was under 7 hours for me to beat both single player & co-op, it can take longer for other people and quicker for pros.

You can see that being a full blown title that the game has more work on the graphics, more audio, more stages. However I do think that they overlooked the core values that made Portal 1 so great and just tried to pretty it up and fancy it up instead of expanding on those core values.

Definitely worth buying, but definitely room to be better as well.

Reply 1 : ViciousXUSMC's Portal 2 Review

First off, nice review, thanks ViciousXUSMC.

Minor spoilers below, nothing heartbreaking though.

I felt this was definitely more of the same, and easier in a lot of respects than Portal 1. Story was good for sure, and environments in some places were massive, but really no need for it because there's nothing you can do with it. It would have been nice to have more open options to get from A to B instead of a fixed solution. Use the environment more, something like the original Splinter Cell games.

Regarding your play time. I don't want to question but 7 hours total for single player and co-op doesn't seem right. If you are basing this on your Steam clock, then there have been numerous articles showing this to be inaccurate for some reason, and are looking for clarification (I'll post links if I find them again). I'm slower than most, but still finished it in about 8 real-time hours for single player. I'd say the last two chapters take about 30% of the time compared to all the rest together. Just requires a little more thought.

And don't even get me started with the in-game store. I guess ok, but why? That's all I'll say.

I also would highly recommend playing Portal 1 before 2 because the whole story will make a lot more sense.

I guess there's lots of positives to this game too. Just look at Portal 1 positives, plus add in the few new mechanics of gameplay and Co-op (which I haven't done yet).

In my mind this game just begs a capture the flag type map where you drop the opponents flag if you go through one of their portals. I think it would be great fun.

That in mind, there is supposed to be an SDK out in the coming weeks, so there will definitely be user made mods at least, and hints of Valve DLC.

Reply 2 : ViciousXUSMC's Portal 2 Review

Capture the flag? You mean capture the companion cube (or edgeless safety cube)

Having some "game" type maps would add some replay value to the game for sure.

I miss some of the old puzzle methods. I do not think even once in the entire game did I have to do a double portal lunge jump (forget the name used for this move)

Where you have to get across a distance and cant put a portal on the other side so you put a portal on the floor and one high up on the wall behind you. Fall out of the wall, and then back into the portal on the floor, and the momentum from the fall when you come out of the portal on the wall the 2nd time sends you flying.

This kind of trick is more portal 1 nature, nothing like this really in portal 2. If they wanted you to do this in P2 they would have a blatantly obvious fall with just a few tiles down below that hold a portal to signal you that you must fall and use a portal.

This kind of hand holding is what made the game so easy even with all the new elements in the game.

Reply 3 : ViciousXUSMC's Portal 2 Review

Yeah, it was easier than p1, but it was more fun and more content. Some of the more advanced portal 1 techniques were... frustrating, to say the least. I noticed they removed the ability to pick up aperture computers, and you can't seem to do the item/camera-hopping thing that you pretty much needed to do in p1 for the advanced gold medals.

I do think that one of the few things they could have improved on was a simple difficulty setting. I'm going to play through SP again (and probably more than once after that), it would have been nice to look at a puzzle on a hard difficulty and go "what the heck, I don't remember this being like this at all". Difficulty changes are pretty simple things to add to your game to encourage replays, you know? It works for almost every other SP game I have.

Reply 4 : ViciousXUSMC's Portal 2 Review

I remember one double portal jump I had to do I think somewhere in Chapter 8, but maybe I wasn't doing it the "intended way". In any case, I did think it was easier. I guess I just took my time, and figured stuff out. If I couldn't, I just quit the game, did something else, then tried again and it came to me. I only "cheated" once by watching a walk-thru, and it ended up I was doing the right thing, it just wasn't working for me for some reason. Took dozens of portal throws for it to finally catch then it worked, whatever.

The final battle also CTD'd to me three times. Thankfully that wasn't too difficult either.

I may actually go back and play again after I finish co-op though and see if I can run through it at a decent clip. There were a few areas even when I knew what to do it took me several tries.

Reply 6 : ViciousXUSMC's Portal 2 Review

Oh man you used a walkthru? I banned myself no matter how stuck I got to look at once since I knew that the only real goal of the game is the solving part.

I got stuck for about 10 minutes on 2 occasions in single player, other than that it was like walking through a movie

Reply 7 : ViciousXUSMC's Portal 2 Review

I have never laughed so much in a game before, but oh boy portal 2 so far has made me laugh so hard just from the damn dialogues.

Spoiler :

I just got to the point where turrets are being made and discarded/passed. Some of the lines that either the defects or the working ones blurt out while they get tossed into the incineration room are so freaking funny!

hopefully the game has some replay values.

It should say US Military only but at any rate AAFES = Army Air Force Exchange Service. It's a store for US military members/families.

Afraid not. The Dell discounts are offered through the AAFES' online store. To register for an account, the website verifies military status by checking your social security number.

Yeah I know what you mean, I purchased a 17x at the 20%. I was more posting this because they had the m14x as well.

The PM was clarifying his brother's access to purchase from aafes since he has sworn in, but not shipped to basic yet.

This is awesome! It should also be noted that military retired and dependents can also cash in on this discount. AKA if you can get on base and buy from AAFES in store, you can buy online.

Simple sound editing

I'm hoping somone can suggest a good, cheap (even free) software. I know a guy who plays drums in a band. Someone recorded some footage of a show using a camcorder. His bass drum was a bit too loud for the recording and creates distortion in the recording. We would like to run those video files through a software which would allow us to slightly decrease that specific portion of the audio (the bass drum).

I'm not too familiar with audio resampling so it needs to be a simple software to use and I'm really not interested in spend much or any money on it. Just hoping there is something simple we could use for this one job.

This is on DVD though, so the software needs to support VOB files. Even if the resulting file is not VOB, that's ok.

Thanks a lot for any suggestions.

Reply 1 : Simple sound editing

If there is just one or two audio tracks, no software today will target "just the drum". For now, there is no such software that does this.
Bob

Reply 2 : Simple sound editing

Thanks Bob. The drum is not on its own track, no. Its just a straight live recording in a club, using a camcorder. Well, that's ok then. i appreciate the response. I won't continuing looking for one! happy

iPod will only play first portion of files

I've been using RealPlayer to rip CD's for years and have no run into a new issue with audio books. I'll get an audio book on CD, and rip it so I can listen on my iPod, but the player will only play the first 20 seconds or so of the mp3, and then it hangs up... then skips to the next file.

Any ideas?

Reply 1 : iPod will only play first portion of files

One of the common answers is "Open itunes on your desktop computer. Right click on the song (control
clock for those of you without a right click button). Go to get info
selection. Click on the "options" tab. Unclick the stop time options
box which lets you stop a song after a certain time. Re-synch. You
should be all set. A few of my song suddenly had this setting enabled
for unknown reasons. Ghosts?"

There are a few others but the thing is, there is no one thing or answer.

I did as you suggest, and the ten files I looked at did NOT have that box checked.

You find it can do that. There are too many fixes and no one fix or cause.

You may want to consider never using the forum's question format as it hinders any discussion. I want to avoid any bad feelings but do try other AudioCD rippers. It does not matter it worked before. Updates of any sort can unhinge what used to work. Be nimble.

The common theme here seems to be, there is no real cause or answer. I gotta wonder how iPods got to be so popular when they have so much trouble with their basic purpose.

But folk continue to create the issue. I'm unsure if you missed the cause. I didn't point it out since many get upset it's that.

multiple issues system corrupting

Hi all,
I have got a windows error 7 14001.
I noticed weird things yesterday after I downloaded latest windows
updates 98 meg worth 2 days prior. Itunes brings up 14001 error 7,
mailwasher keeps wanting to close on opening, and I get repeated pop ups
saying lan connected and then unplugged.
I recently reinstalled endnote 14 after using clean up which appears to
wipe the program from word.
My internet searches don't seem to help me much.
I am using windows xp service pack 3.
I have reinstalled Itunes and it says successfully installed but does
not open repeating the 14001 error 7 message.
Will cleaner remove dll files that are sometimes needed to run
applications.
I have also had issue with power point saying files are corrupted and
needs to open in safe mode. these are uni files and safe.
i reinstalled mailwasher today and now it won't open at all.
My machine is also running really really slow.
I have scanned with nod 32. antimalware bytes super anti spyware and did
a kaspersky online scan.
all not revealing anything major.
need some help.
i also closed my kids accounts on the machine and so this is all i have
done different in the past few days.

With multiple problems like this the first step is to see if Windows' own System Restore will take your system back to where it was before all this happened.

System Restore is in the Start menu > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System restore. Choose a date/time before all this started.

Mark

Reply 3 : multiple issues system corrupting

Hi Mark,
thanks for reply.
I did a system restore back a month prior to initial problems and according to windows no changes to my machine have taken place.
Does that mean there was no change to registry or anything like and would it be worth doing a root kit test if so what do you recommend?
kevin

Reply 4 : multiple issues system corrupting

frequent file corruption can be caused by bad RAM. You can test the RAM with memtest86 from here: http://memtest86.com/

Download the ISO file for Windows (the first download link) and create a CD from it using IMGBurn from here: http://filehippo.com/download_imgburn/

Boot your PC from the CD you created and run the memory test for at least five passes.
If the test shows that your RAM has errors, you will need to replace it.

It's a black screen with a blue rectange that says "enter current password" I have tried doing the ctrl alt delete thing and F2, F8 and F12.. But nothing works! Help!

Reply 1 : I can't get past the startup password on my laptop

You can use NTPASSWD to reset the admin password or try booting SAFE MODE (widely documented) and trying the administrator account to change your password.
Bob

Reply 2 : I can't get past the startup password on my laptop

I have tried that.. Won't let me do anything. Not safe mode.. NOTHING! I'm getting extremely aggravated here. lol

Reply 3 : I can't get past the startup password on my laptop

Usually NTPASSWD does a nice job. I fear you may need to use http://www.lostpassword.com next.

-> I'm sorry but I have been lax in repeating the advice about having a spare admin account.

Do you have any other accounts you can use?
Bob

Reply 4 : I can't get past the startup password on my laptop

I don't think you understand.. It's not an administrative password that I need. The first thing it goes to is this black screen with a blue enter password rectangle. Because I do have a spare account. I can't even get that far for it to show me the log in for the accounts.

Reply 5 : I can't get past the startup password on my laptop

Sorry that we got off to the wrong direction but I did ask.

-> Now that it's a BIOS PASSWORD we need the make and model of the machine.

DON'T PANIC. That password can be reset. Sometimes it's a factory only job but they can be reset.

Help please? Got viruses and not sure how I can delete them.

Hello,
recently (within the last 3-4 months) I've noticed my computer getting noticeably slower. About, a month or so ago I got Kaspersky Internet Security 2011. At first I was unable to update it, but got that sorted. Then about 2 weeks ago I began to notice that viruses were starting to attack my computer. Well, yesterday I got a virus come through my computer and Kaspersky was unable to delete it. As in, it was able to delete it but something was stopping it. Which has led me to believe that I have a number of minor viruses on my computer which have blocked Kaspersky from updating and removing viruses and other such nuisances. These viruses are causing Windows Explorer to crash and freeze and slow my computer down to a nominal level which is really frustrating me. I have Windows 7 Ultimate. These viruses/trojans, whatever they are are getting on my nerves. They are stopping me doing a lot. I can't view my hidden files to try to discover where they are and remove them manually. They crash my computer REPEATEDLY. And that is seriously ******* me off. (Mind the language sorry.)

I seriously need help on this as I can't afford to buy any thing for my computer to sort it out on a hardware and software level.

Oh also I should mention that the viruses block access to Kaspersky website. It also stops me downloading most files.

Please help and give advice on what I can do.

Yours sincerely,
Friedrich.

Reply 1 : Help please? Got viruses and not sure how I can delete them.

Friedrich..

Some questions prior to making any suggestions.

• Which A/V did you have prior to Kaspersky? How did you remove it? DID you remove it?
• What other security software do you have running in real-time, besides KIS?
• Did the virus KIS detected have a name? And a location?
• Are you getting any error messages? Or pop ups?
• Which browser are you using? (Name AND version)
• Are you able to run any online scans? ESET's Online Scanner would be one. SUPERAntiSpyware Online Safe Scan would be another.

In order to rule out possible causes, see if you're able to install (and run) Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. It's free and can be downloaded from here or (directly) from here. If you are able to install it, make sure to update it first.

Open IE and go to Tools>Internet Options>Connection Tab. Click on the LAN settings button. Is there a check mark in the box next to "Use a proxy server for your LAN"? IF so, uncheck it. Click OK. And then OK, again.

In order to narrow-down what we might suggest, it would help to have the above information.

Reply 2 : Help please? Got viruses and not sure how I can delete them.

In answer to your questions.

1. I've only ever used Kaspersky on this computer. But I've completely removed it a few times. Using the specialist software they supply to remove it.

2. I don't have anything other than what I downloaded about an hour ago jsut cos I'm tired of not being able to
remove trojans and such. And thats called Trojan Remover.

3. Yeah it did. Its called Rootkit.Win32.TDSS.mbr but I'm pretty sure there's more viruses than that.

4. And yeah every time I start the computer it comes up saying "Hardware unable to start. Administator priviledges required." Or something along those lines.

5. I use Flock 3. The one which is almost finished with as a browser.

6. Nope I'm not. It won't let me download anything. I've tried changing the settings repeatedly to download things.

Reply 3 : Help please? Got viruses and not sure how I can delete them.

Fredrich

I'm unfamiliar with Windows 7's Administrative Privileges. I presume you tried logging in as an Administrator, which proved fruitless. And you're unable to right-click and "run as administrator". It may be a key fact, but regretfully, I'm unable to help in this area.

You say you are unable to download anything. How did you download Trojan Remover? What happened when you tried to download MBAM? Does this mean, you were unable to scan with ESET and SUPERAntiSpyware? When you checked IE, was there a checkmark next to "Use a proxy server"? I presume you're using it to download Microsoft's updates.

The only thing I can offer at this point, is a tool which should eradicate Rootkit Win32.TDSS.mbr. It was developed by Kaspersky. TDSSKiller is the utility. If you're able, download the TDSSKiller.zip and extract it to a folder on your computer. The tool can be run in Safe Mode. Give Hitman Pro a try, too.

In some instances, a malicious process is responsible for preventing downloads. In this case we generally recommend downloading various tools to a different computer, then transferring them to yours. See Grif's instructions here. I don't know if it fits your situation, but it must be tried. If for no other reason, than to rule it out.

Perhaps, Grif has some other suggestions. If all else fails, I would suggest posting at a HijackThis forum, which utilizes certain removal tools, we don't use here. The diagnostic tools used, will get a better look into your system and tell you why you're continually getting re-infected. You can find the forums listed on the left-hand side of this page.

Best of luck..
Carol

Reply 4 : Help please? Got viruses and not sure how I can delete them.

Well. I'm the only user on my account so I am the administrator. And I probably can click and run as administrator. But however, viruses have blocked me updating Kaspersky, updating Windows (That occurred a long time ago I think since I haven't been able to update to Service pack 1 on Windows 7 :/)

Yesterday my internet got blocked as well due to viruses I think and today I had to do Startup Repair as today it wouldn't even show me the desktop or anything. So had to do System Restore back to a previous time.

And although I'm shamed to admit it. I downloaded the Trojan Remover through a torrent. Seems I'm able to download those but not anything else. I tried the kaspersky TDSS removal tool and it only came up with one suspicious file. Seems I can't get rid of it. And what tools do you suggest I download?

I'll have a look at the HijackThis thingimy. I'll see what I can do.

Reply 5 : Help please? Got viruses and not sure how I can delete them.

Hi Fredrich..

'And although I'm shamed to admit it. I downloaded the Trojan Remover through a torrent.'

And although I'M ashamed to admit it, I originally thought there was Torrent involvement. I intentionally left the question out of my post, giving you the benefit of the doubt. As you seem to already know, it remains to be a source of infection and re-infection.

I DO recommend you post a HJT log at one of the sites I included in my last post. I can suggest a bunch of different type scanners, but I still think it's the best way to go. Especially so, if there's rootkit (or bootkit) involvement. If you do decide to post a log, have a look at your future. Most HJT forums will recommend uninstalling any P2P file sharing programs. You may want to consider it prior to posting. What you do after that is up to you.

I wish you the best of luck..
Carol

Reply 6 : Help please? Got viruses and not sure how I can delete them.

I rarely use torrents. I only resorted to it because of these viruses. And yeah I know that
torrents can be the source of viruses and such. Hence why I'm exceptionally careful what I download.
I always put downloads on my spare harddisk then scan it.

Thank you for you help so far though Carol.
I am grateful

Does Norton 360 Premier Edition

for three computers give you 25GB of online storage space per each computer?

or just 25 or 27GB for all three combined. Thanks
,Alex

Reply 1 : Does Norton 360 Premier Edition

but I have no ready answer. Norton's web site doesn't really help.

I suspect, (but am not at all sure), that the 25 GB of online storage is for your "subscription", and not 25GB for each computer.

However, I suggest you check with them yourself. They have forums where such questions can be asked and perhaps you will find an answer there, or if not, ask thequestion yourself;

Need to repair, reinstall Win7Pro, I messed with Adobe files

32 bit. I was trying to tidy my Adobe files in Program Files, messed up my Win.7Pro computer... I can't get anything Adobe back in, plus I think I deleted a bunch of files the week before and I have programs that can't find associations. Also, even after reinstalling my HP Printer, I still can't get the scan to work. There does not seem to be a 'repair' on the disc and I'm scared to reinstall and loose everything. I do have a brain injury and don't want to mess anything up further (like lose my files which include ALL my son's wedding pictures...)

Reply 1 : Need to repair, reinstall Win7Pro, I messed with Adobe files

If the pictures are in Adobe Photoshop albums, you can call Adobe for help in maintaining their safety. To be on the safe side, can you make a backup to a CD/DVD, or an external drive/flash drive of the files you are concerned about?

Strange UAC-Related Issue

I've experienced this issue a total of 4 times now on my X120e, but never my T500. Both are running Windows 7 64-bit, the X120e running HP and the T500 running Professional.

After booting up, which is perfectly normal (all the startup programs I have do launch normally), no other programs appear when they are launched. Further details:

- Windows components do launch--for example, IE9 launches normally, as does Notepad, Calculator, etc.

- The processes do appear in the Task Manager, however, they only have ~100K memory associated with each of them

- Attempting to launch multiple instances of each of those programs adds further processes, even for those programs that do not allow multiple instances (ie, foobar2000).

- Launching the same programs as an administrator does work, and they appear normally again

The last item is what leads me to believe this is a UAC issue. Rebooting sometimes fixes the issue, but not always.

Someone here seems to be having the same issue, but they were unable to resolve it.

Any help is much appreciated!

Reply 1 : Strange UAC-Related Issue

So, is this a Lenovo x120e issue, or a UAC issue?

I'm led to believe this is a UAC issue, as I mentioned in my OP. My reasons for believing that this is the case:

1.- The programs do launch when given administrative privileges

2.- Startup programs do launch properly

3.- Windows components do launch properly

So it's a software issue, and it's a Windows software issue--unrelated to the hardware, although I'm a little perplexed why I've never had the issue on my T500, but have it on my X120e. The only software differences between them are HP v. Professional (should be no real difference) and TPFanControl, which I have on my X120e but not my T500.

Reply 3 : Strange UAC-Related Issue

very odd, makes me think something with your user account / permissions is messed up.

Reply 4 : Strange UAC-Related Issue

The thought brought up by the poster above is worth pursuing: What happens if you create a new standard user account, and try things from there? Ideally, you would just create the new account, but not use it at all, until you see the issue on your regular account. At that point, log out, and log in to the new account, and see if this has the problem, too. Then we'll go from there.

As an aside, it's very strange that programs start from the startup folder. Those should behave in exactly the same way as all the others, since they are started with the same privileges as the ones you start manually. I'm not usually quick with this kind of a suspicion, but some malicious software might be at the bottom of this.

Reply 5 : Strange UAC-Related Issue

It's better to reload the OS if it's a software bug and better to hunt down a solution if it's an incorrect setting. The wrong thing to do is try and troubleshoot bad coding.

Reply 6 : Strange UAC-Related Issue

Create a new user profile, log in to the new user profile, copy the desktop, download folders etc then delete the corrupted user profile.

I would strongly urge users not to use "cleaner" utilities as they are likely to mess up certain stuff if the wrong data is deleted.

can anyone explain why ff, ie, etc no longer allow java/cript to work nor mime files. I'm told to configure for mime but an engineer I'm not. Sites needing java now don't run like my bank. I'd rather not pay Sun to ask I've tried all their fixes nothing even toolbars in ff4 don't work some bad upgrade

Reply 1 : browser ?

Javascript may be turned off. You are right folk are not engineers but we must learn where these controls are.

The reason such things like this happen is that the media awards browsers for SAFETY. So if turning it off is safer, it may arrive like that.

And why not another browser if this one is too hard to configure?

So "nothing" means an error message. That's not nothing. That's important information. Can you tell what error message exactly (exactly means: the full error message without typo's, so we can google it).

File type: what filetype does your browser want to download but can't show)? And, indeed, I shouldn't know how to tell my browser (any browser) about file types it must understand. As you don't link to the instructions given by your bank, that's the end of the story.

And sorry to read that you can't install Java.

As I said, it might be better to reinstall your OS. Out of the box it should work like it always did.

Should work if you follow http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/support/index.html
Essential: first uninstall!

Still not clear what the site says. If the message should have been "You either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Macromedia's Flash Player." then http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/186/7d1862a.html might be helpful. But you say it is "you need javascript. flash via adobe is installed" and that's clearly not the same.

You said the bank tells you "To resolve this issue, follow the steps provided in the links below for the type of browser you are using." It seems you didn't. You're the only one who possibly can, so why don't you?

The recovery partition, by the way, is a very good way to throw everything away and start all over with a clean well-working system.

Vista still slow after full reinstall

A month or so ago, I reinstalled vista hoping to get back to that "snappy new" state of my nearly 2 year old PC (Dell studio xps 1640). It doesn't seem to work quite like it used to and I can't work out why since the hardware is still exactly the same.

For a comparison, it used to work almost like this (though the PC in the video has an SSD so it loads a little quicker, it still gives and idea of what my PC used to be like. Single apps used to open almost as fast but obviously once you start opening lots of things at once then it would bog down a bit more unlike the SSD).

YouTube - DELL STUDIO XPS16 MULTITASKING

It also runs hotter than it used to for some reason which I also can't fathom given that I regularly clean the vents and have both changed the paste to MX-3 and undervolted it. It used to run with the fan off for the most part when it was only idling or web browsing but now it's pretty much the other way round. When it was new, my web browsing core temps were round 36-40* with undervolting, now I rarely see below 45-50*, causing the fan to be on most of the time.

Reply 1 : Vista still slow after full reinstall

Perhaps in changing the paste the heatsink wasn't realigned properly? Any processes eating up CPU cycles that you can see in the task manager?

Reply 2 : Vista still slow after full reinstall

I've re-set the heatsink multiple times to try and fix it, each time when I pull it up it was perfectly applied with no air bubbles. I don't really understand why it's running hot to be honest. I originally thought it could be due to crosstalk or something like that, meaning the hardware has to try harder as it ages but I did some research and found out that silicon actually runs slightly cooler with age.

As for CPU time, it does seem to be active more than usual but when I look in tast manager there never seems to be that much activity yet my CPU useage is quite often round 30% simply for browsing the internet with a few other programs open in the background.

Reply 3 : Vista still slow after full reinstall

Did you remove the heatsink and inspect them for dust and lint? I have a Dell Vostro 1500 and 1700. They need to be stripped down to the motherboard every 8-12 months because temps begin to climb.

I noticed the fan in my Vostro 1500 jump into high gear. I stripped it down and found the GPU heatsink was covered in dust, hence clogging airflow. I'm not familiar with your system but I would check wherever there are heatsink fins and make sure they are not blocked with dust or lint.

I didn't touch the CPU heatsink or repaste and my temps went down by 15c to a normal 37c for the laptop. Before it was climbing to 52c.

edit: What paste are you using and how much? I've accidentally over applied thermal paste and it had the reverse effect.

Reply 4 : Vista still slow after full reinstall

I regularly clean out my heatsink so dust shouldn't be a problem.

For paste I used AS MX-3 and a blob that would probably equate to a ball about 2mm in diameter. Dust on the interface shouldn't be a problem either since every time I've re-set the heatsink I clean off everything thoroughly with IPA, making sure not to touch it. Every time I've re-set the heatsink, application was pretty much perfect with 100% coverage, no air bubbles and as good as zero spillage.

I might just go and get a new heatsink to see if that makes a difference, they're only 10 or so so there's not much to lose. I figure that there might be some really stubborn dust or buildup that just isn't coming out.

iTunes Locks Up My Computer

I'm using iTunes 10 in Windows XP SP3 and it keeps locking up my computer. I can still move the mouse around, but it's like the screen has frozen and I can't close it through the task manager. I have to do hard restart. I've tried virus and spyware scans, uninstalling and reinstalling and it still locks up. Is there a fix for this?

Reply 1 : iTunes Locks Up My Computer

Since we know iTunes 10.1.1 does run on Windows XP SP3 then there must be an issue with this machine or the OS on this machine. Given only that it doesn't work on this machine is not going to help determine why it fails.

Reply 3 : iTunes Locks Up My Computer

But given the details so far, I don't have much more to offer.

The cause could be as simple as some security suite blocking the app to as nasty as an old install of XP that has too many dings (damage) or the old story of the owner that fell into the "Registry Cleaners make your machine go fast" TRAP.

It's up to you to share what you can and hope folk find it.

Reply 4 : iTunes Locks Up My Computer

Try this. Close everything except Windows. Plug in your iPod. Open task manager (Cl-Alt-Del). Click on the Processes tab. Close ALL processes that have anything to do with iPod or iTunes. For example, ipodservice.exe, AppleMobileDevice. There could be others and it is essential that you close all of them. Then wait for about 2 minutes. Open My Computer and your iPod should show up as a Removable Disk. Close My Computer. Open iTunes and after about 45 seconds your iPod should show up under Devices.

Personally I'm hoping they fixed these issues:

  2. Grand Theft Auto 4 memory detection. FIXED

Installed on the R2. Issue from the BETA driver still continues with WoW. Anyone confirm?

Starts up with Audio and a Black Screen with no images. The WoW cursor is visible but nothing else.

Edit: Adding -opengl to the target line allows it to run without issues except the settings arent able to go above low for shaders. So it has something to do with the gxapi. I guess Ill revert back to 276.xx until the issue is resolved.

WoW says that in order to increase shader and water quality it "Requires a shader model 3 capable graphics card"

In previous drivers the card was able to handle it.

Not really.

Would any R1 users like to test an Optimus version of this driver?

Reply 6 : nVidia 270.61 Drivers released for R2

Can anyone tells me if it fixes the texture setting problems in the witcher? I have to run a pretty old driver to make it work.

Reply 7 : nVidia 270.61 Drivers released for R2

I may have a go at knocking up an M11xR1 hybrid driver set.

Nivida 270.61/Intel 2302, like how difficult can it be...skip, skip, skip...

What??? And there's even a hint, it may work? We can build it! More power Igor!!! More power!!! ha ha ha...

But seriously, like.. Just an exercise in science to confirm:

  1. An M11xR1 doesn't support Optimus when BIOS is left in hybrid mode.
  2. An M11xR1 is now, also able to use Optimus when not in discrete BIOS mode.
Or is there's something you know, that has prompted this line of thought?

It's no problem to test it, just interested in the parameters defining the test environment.

What Intel GMA version do you think you'd need. I have had Intel GMA 2302 running on an M11xR1

Good luck making a Hybrid Driver set.

Not really a hint, just a new project now that BIOS modding is all done: Drivers for the R1 that are the latest and retain switching capability of some sort. I'm just picking up where Nautis left off.

Optimus on the M11x R1 has been done before, except it wasn't successful as a) It has an overlay (now fixed by nando4) and b) the drivers weren't that new (The R1 is now 2 drivers sets behind [265/266 and 270]).

The BIOS should be set to switchable as that keeps the GMA enabled.

The second item in the list is correct.

I was thinking about the driver dichotomy R1 users face: Either use old drivers with issues to retain switching or take a battery hit and use the newest drivers.

The parameter I'm most concerned with is battery life. With Optimus there should be less battery life then Switchable as the GT335 gets polled every so often.

GSM/GPRS modem quality

I'm considering using this modem in an application:

http://www.sparkfun.com/products/10138
It is much less expensive than other similar modems. I'm just wondering if the lower price means lower quality? I tested the modem, it does work, but can cheap components degrade over time? Can anyone give me some feedback on this issue before I purchase a larger quantity? What should I look for to determine the overall quality of the modem?

Thank you.

USB Drives slow

All of a sudden, my USB drives are running super slow. I made no changes or additions to what is plugged in the drives. Whenever I plug in the drive I get "this drive could perform faster" (which never happened before) When I go to load a new large file onto my usb drive/portable hd, ect. i get 1 mb/sec (at most). Any port I try it in, I get the same speed.

Any ideas? Solutions?

Reply 1 : USB Drives slow

The owner had updated drivers with Windows Update or that Driver Update button. As there is no make or model we can't discuss ideas on where the right drivers might be. This leaves the advice to use System Restore to the time before "sudden."

however i do have win7 ultimate on it (but the drives were fine after i installed 7 about a year ago)

My advice is to use system restore to when it worked. As to the cause, the cause continues to be that Windows Update and accepting drivers most of the time. If that's some HP, check HP for motherboard drivers to install and hope.

Subinacl and changing ownership of a folder

Hello,So here is my situation...I just bought a new computer, so i had to reinstall Windows XP on a brand new HD.I still have my old HD, so i plugged into my computer. Now i'm trying to access "Documents and Settings" folder so i can copy my Utorrent and Firefox config. But when i try to access the folder it says Access DeniedThe folder i want to access is:J:Documents and SettingsAdministrateurDoing some research on google, i found out that i can get access to the folder using the tool "Subinacl".... I downloaded but i dont understand how it worksCould someone please guide me how i can use subinacl to unlock folder "J:Documents and SettingsAdministrateur"Thanks

Reply 1 : Subinacl and changing ownership of a folder

My advice: don't use the command prompt. Use the GUI.

Boot into Safe Mode. Find the folder in Explorer. Right click>Properties and you'll see the security tab. On that tab you can take ownership.

How to use mpg files from Panasonic SDR-S26 camcorder

I've been doing a lot of research to find the answer to my question and I fear that answer is, "Sorry you can't do that" but I'll try asking anyway.

I have a Panasonic SDR-S26P/PC camera that I've been shooting video on for a while. Only now am I attempting to move the video files from the camera to my computer ( running Windows XP). I installed the awful "VideoCam Suite" that came with the camera and was able to move the files onto my computer. However, when I try to view the files with Windows Media Player or edit them with Windows Movie Maker, I have problems. WMP displays the videos at a low quality without sound. WMM won't even recognize the video files saved on my computer.

I've learned in other places that the problem may be related to the file format used by the camera but the file extensions associated with them on my computer are just .mpg. Other files that copied into the folder with the mpg files have extensions that are unfamiliar to me (.cont and .mtv). Does anyone know how I can alter these mpg files so they will be recognizable and usable by other common applications?

Much thanks.

Wireless internet drops when receiving or making phonecall

I have an Orange Livebox connected wirelessly to my laptop. Everything's been working fine until the last few weeks. Whenever I receive or make a call using my iDECT s2i cordless telephone the internet drops and it takes ages to reconnect. I've checked all the connections and every phone socket has an ADSL filter. I understand that some wireless devices can affect a router and that these are usually 2.4ghz devices but I have no idea if my cordless telephones are 2.4ghz or 5.8ghz or indeed if this is the source of the problem at all.

Reply 1 : Wireless internet drops when receiving or making phonecall

Try other cordless phones. If any of the other cordless sets work, you've found the problem.

The interesting part is how makers will respond to you about this.
Bob

Reply 2 : Wireless internet drops when receiving or making phonecall

Does your wireless phone use the VoIP connection of the orange box or does it plug directly into a normal wall phone jack. It is unlikely it is wireless interference you phone runs at 1.9g.

If you are using the VoIP port I would be looking at the router as the cause.

Adobe Flash Player not working

I reinstalled my Windows Vista Home Premium operating system on an Acer desk top with an Athlon 3800 microprocessor. I was able to reinstall all my software including Windows Mail.

When I tried to look at a YouTube video the message prompting me to download Adobe Flash Player 10 or higher appeared so I downloaded it. Flash Player will not work with any website. I uninstalled it and reinstalled to no avail.

Coincidentally I cannot open links in email messages. An error message appears, "Application Not Found".

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Try the steps below:

Click on the link below to see if you can load the Flash animation (banner) without the system crashing at:
http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

Don't worry, it's not a video, it shouldn't crash -- if it does, this won't fix your issue. If it works without crashing, right-click on the Flash animation (banner) and uncheck "Enable hardware acceleration" from the Settings panel. You should now be able to view the YouTube videos without crashing the computer.

Hope this helps.

Clicked on the link with IE9 but the banner would not display. I clicked on the link with Google Chrome and the banner box displayed,"You have version 10,2,154,25 installed". The accompanying table lists that version for Chrome. The version for Windows Internet Explorer is 10,2,153,1.

Yesterday I uninstalled Google Chrome before uninstalling Flash Player and then installing Flash Player. I must have a setting that is telling the downloader to use the Chrome version even if I started the process with Internet Explorer.

While I prefer to use IE I may be stuck with Chrome for now. Besides IE9 is a whole different animal from IE8.

Thanks for your help. Now I know what has happened I just don't know why.

Reply 3 : Adobe Flash Player not working

So does Firefox/Opera... Please download the appropriate standalone Flash Player installer from the link below to your desktop. Once there, double click to install it:

Flash Player for IE:
http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_ax.exe

Flash Player for Non-IE browser (Opera, Firefox etc):
http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe

Hope this helps.

Reply 4 : Adobe Flash Player not working

Tried your suggestion but didn't work. I tried removing all Adobe Flash Player folders, uninstalling Flash Player and installing installing Flash Player for Windows IE. Maybe it is a registry problem. Something is telling the installer to install the Chrome version.

Reply 5 : Adobe Flash Player not working

If you're using Vista 64 bit, then Flash DOES NOT work on the 64 bit version of Internet Explorer. It's not supported. There should be a 32 bit version of Internet Explorer and if you've installed the correct Flash Player for Internet Explorer, then the 32 bit version of IE should work correctly.

Hope this helps.

Reply 6 : Adobe Flash Player not working

I have Vista 32 bit.

Reply 7 : Adobe Flash Player not working

I found the solution: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/834234?tstart=0

Using IE8, go to Tools, Manage addons and under "Show"(very light text) look in All addons and Run without Permission.

Is "Shockwave Flash Object" Installed and Enabled? What version? Not the Shockwave ActiveX Control, that is the ActiveX Control for Shockwave Player, which is different than Flash Player.

Using your other browser, look in plugins for the Shockwave Flash plugin. Is that Installed and Enabled?

The plugin was disabled. Changed to enable and Flash Player now works with IE9.

Reply 8 : Adobe Flash Player not working

After installing Flash Player, it will automatically be "enabled" unless choices to disable it were made after installation.. Interesting.

Thanks for posting back.

Grif

Reply 9 : Adobe Flash Player not working

Back when I reinstalled my Windows Vista operating system I installed Internet Explorer first but not Adobe Flash Player. I installed Google Chrome which includes Adobe Flash Player a couple days later. I'm wondering if the Google Chrome installation disabled the Shockwave Flash plugin for IE. Google Chrome and IE use different versions of Adobe Flash Player. I will try replicating the conditions so if it will happen again.

AVG Installation

Hi, Running XP Pro SP3 - Just uninstalled "old" 2011 restarted and tried to reinstall latest recommended by you today (#1321). Download OK, extration Ok - but then .... nothing. I have checked all of the recommendations (andministrator, etc etc) and tried several times but to no avail. Right now only protection is Advance SystemCare Professional. Please adviceThank you!!

Reply 1 : AVG Installation

Hello carlsson1,

Please note that only one security solution with active resident part should be installed and enabled at a time.

Disable Advanced System Care and try to perform all steps in full reinstallation instructions. Install AVG with full installation package, not with Online installer.

Should the issue persists, provide us with installation log files and with MSinfo output.

Upload requested files to your favourite online storage service and provide us with link.

Thank you

Windows Media Player Library problems

This infuriates me.

For the record, I'm running the latest version of Windows Media Player on 64-bit Windows 7.

WMP 12's library function has always been a bit wonky for me. I've had trouble adding album art and ID3 tags to music I ripped off-line in the past, but the whole thing has gone ridiculously screwy now.

Lately, WMP has refused to recognize any changes I make to either the ID3 tags or the actual location of music files. If I have music in one folder (say, a general folder for the odd iTunes download for an artist that I only have one or two songs from), and then later move it to an artist-specific folder, the player refuses to acknowledge the file's existence, even if I manually delete the old file from the library add the new one. The player continues to try to play the file from the old folder (which is, of course, impossible).

Lately it also seems that albums have been splitting into two separate folders within the "Albums" view in WMP. One of the albums will be with art, the other without.

Just today I noticed that a bunch of songs in my library have doubled themselves, so now in the playlists instead of one copy of a song, there is now two.

I've tried reinstalling the whole damn application from microsoft.com, and it seemed to help for a while before things went screwy again. I really like the aesthetic appeal of WMP 12 and just about everything else about it. The thing would be perfect, if it actually worked. I've tried both Winamp and iTunes and to be honest they both turn me off immensely from a visual/navigation standpoint. I use iTunes to buy music, and to convert songs into .m4a when I need to, but as a media player it just doesn't do it for me. I'd like to continue using WMP if at all possible.

In summary, my problems are as follows:

- Unable to add, remove, or change ID3 tags of any file within the player. If I change them outside WMP, WMP refuses to acknowledge that any such change has occured.

- Unable to delete or add any file from or to the library.

- Unable to add or change album art.

- Doubled songs within playlists.

- Unable to change any song's physical location on the hard drive without WMP losing track and getting confused.

- Albums splitting in two within WMP.

- Also, WMP stopped adding music to the library automatically about a week ago, though it continues to occasionally flash something along the lines of "Updating music library" in the bottom right corner.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to fix any or all of these problems, I would be greatly appreciative. Sorry for going on so long.

Reply 1 : Windows Media Player Library problems

Just one. Be sure to turn off that rearrange my music and that other item about replacing music information. Some find that annoying to troublesome. Let me see if I can find a picture about it.

Reply 2 : Windows Media Player Library problems

Thanks for the reply. I always have the "rearrange" option turned off but I do usually leave the "replace media information" option on because, as I said, I have a lot of music that I've ripped off-line that do not have ID3 tags. I've turned that one off as well, so I'll let you know if it works.

Thanks again.

Advanced Systemcare

Hello everybody,

I just installed Advanced Systemcare Free and it seems to be a very good program and I was thinking about buying the pro version as it isn't very expensive and could be very interesting for me (And my computer).
But, I have a problem : If I buy the Pro version, will I have to pay again 10 when there is an update in order to be able to instal the new version?

I thank you for your answers.

Advanced SystemCare from IOBit software.

It has a reputation in these forums. Sadly not a good one.

I do trust you will think carefully about using this software.

Just for your information, look at the comments in the WOT, (Web of Trust), page for this software developer web site;

What could I use then?

I have Malwarebytes installed but I haven't been very satisfied about it. I also have CCleaner, but my computer stayed very slow, although I bought it a year ago... I keep my Hard Drive clean, defrag it when it has to be defragged, etc.
Plus, with Advanced SystemCare there is a game booster and as I play a lot, it could be interesting (I haven't tried it yet though).

So than what?

Reply 3 : Advanced Systemcare

The two main reasons for slowness:
1. Too many programs running in not enough RAM
2. Too slow CPU or graphic card for what you want to do.

Deleting unnecessary files, defragging and 'optimizing' the registry are minor factors.

Please tell: how much performance improvements did you note after running this free version? Don't only tell the numbers (25% faster), but also what was speeded up (booting: went from 75 to 55 seconds, browsing: pages display 10% faster, printing: 10 pages a minute in stead of 5).

(Sorry for some terms, I live in France and have a French computer so it's hard to translate some things...)

First of all, I already checked the programs which were running, comparing them with the RAM used and and Microsoft tells me that the programs running (Opera, Widgets, audio manager, trackpad manager, etc.) use about 20% of my RAM (About 750Mo of my 4Go RAM), so I don't think that I could stop more programs.
At the same moment, my CPU is used at 25% (My processor is a Intel Core i3 M330 2,13 GHZ)
I don't remember my graphic card but I play at two different games : CrossFire (A Counterstrike Like) and Dofus (A French MMORPG). In the beginning my computer didn't have any problems to launch those games but since a couple of weeks the games keep slowing down. At first I thought it was the Internet's fault but my girlfriend plays the same games, on a similar computer (A bit older though) and doesn't have any problems.
Also, when I launch VLC it can take up to 5 minutes before it start's to read the file, etc.

Since I used the Free version of Advanced Systemcare my computer boots up a bit faster (20-30 secs), Opera launches easier (A couple of seconds to display my Home Page as before it could take more than a minute), switching between windows is easier (I don't have a blank page for 3-4 secs) and the launching of the two games seem easier (Although I didn't played them and I didn't use the Game Booster).

I haven't tried all my usual programs like VLC, WMP, etc. I'll keep you informed later in the evening/morning (Depends on which part of the globe you are)

Reply 5 : Advanced Systemcare

That's a lot if you do nothing. With me "System idle" is 99% if I do nothing, with dwm taking 1% of it if I move the mouse in the task manager window. But that is without widgets. not listening to music and on a desktop, so there's no trackpad to manage.

Obviously Advanced Systemcare worked quite well in your system. It might have taken off malware. Maybe better check with other programs (MBAM or an online antivirus).

I doubt if the pro version will do it any better. If not, you know not to buy upgrades.
