How to use mpg files from Panasonic SDR-S26 camcorder

I've been doing a lot of research to find the answer to my question and I fear that answer is, "Sorry you can't do that" but I'll try asking anyway.

I have a Panasonic SDR-S26P/PC camera that I've been shooting video on for a while. Only now am I attempting to move the video files from the camera to my computer ( running Windows XP). I installed the awful "VideoCam Suite" that came with the camera and was able to move the files onto my computer. However, when I try to view the files with Windows Media Player or edit them with Windows Movie Maker, I have problems. WMP displays the videos at a low quality without sound. WMM won't even recognize the video files saved on my computer.

I've learned in other places that the problem may be related to the file format used by the camera but the file extensions associated with them on my computer are just .mpg. Other files that copied into the folder with the mpg files have extensions that are unfamiliar to me (.cont and .mtv). Does anyone know how I can alter these mpg files so they will be recognizable and usable by other common applications?

Much thanks.
