I have a 1 year old studio 1557. Like most 1557 owners, I had the usual overheating, blue screen, freezing issues all of which I've now sorted.
My latest issue is that I'm getting 'AC adapter type cannot be recognised' messages.
I read a tip elsewhere that pushing the plug in quickly, and with a little force can fix the issue - and that works for me most of the time. Obviously I don't want to continue doing that for fear of breaking something inside.
Since my battery is new (old one gave up after 1 year + 1 week - thanks dell!) I can only assume I have an adapter problem - probably something in the jack ?
Anyway, Dell quoted me $150 for a new one. A bit excessive I thought.
So my question is, will this one...

It looks identical to mine and is also 90W. Sadly I can't see the V / A (which are 19.5, 4.62 for me).
They say no, I'm not sure if I believe them.
Does anyone have experience of using different adapters with the 1557 ?

Dell OEM AC adapter from what it seems like a reputable Ebay seller. Make sure you buy OEM and not OEM compatible.

Yes, it's a new 9-cell battery purchased from Dell.
If I can find one at a reasonable price then I'd rather purchase the adapter from Dell, too.

Just had a most amusing chat with Dell. Had to post it here.

What has happened to Dell ? The build quality and customer service have both gone through the floor. I've bought about 5 machines, the first one in 1997 which I remember ordering over the phone + speaking to a very knowledgeable agent.
My 1557 will be my last purchase from them, that's for sure.
